The Ark Pet Shop

Life Skills Gained

This is Louie-
My favorite bird at the Ark Pet Shop
My first year at Iowa State was a quest to decide what I wanted to do when i grow up!  I knew I was good at science- then I just needed to find a path that I enjoyed as well as performed well in.  My job at the Ark Pet Shop in Ames Iowa helped me to do just that.  I discovered I LOVE ANIMALS.  This passion grew beyond my love of Animal Planet and Zoobooks when I was a kid and the constant begging my mother for pet fish, dogs, cats and eventually birds.

The Ark Pet Shop developed many skills.  I learned:
-How to deal with all sorts of people
-How to tell people 'no' when I really didn't feel like what they were doing was right
-How to sell-sell-sell
-Proper handling of all sorts of animals, Cats, Reptiles, Amphibians, Small Mammals, Birds, Fish and even Insects
-Husbandry including feeding, cleaning, mating, displaying or hatching, previously mentioned animals.
-Aquarium Maintenance- set-up, tear down, transportation, water chemistry, filtration
-Basic fish disease prevention and diagnosis

Soon my small apartment was full of pets of my own-I could have charged admission for a small zoo experience.  At the apex of my animal keeping days I was the proud owner of :
  • 3 Cats
  • 1 Springer Spaniel
  • 1 Columbian Red Tail Boa Constrictor
  • 3 Crested Geckos- 1 male and 2 breeding females
  • 13 Fish tanks including freshwater planted tanks and saltwater systems
  • 1 Cockatiel
