My siblings and I grew up at the YMCA. This was a place that I felt welcome and safe, here I gained a sense of belonging and ownership. I started taking swimming lessons in elementary school at the Y and soon was also involved in the dance and baton programs. Every evening was spent, as a family, at the Y. Baton classes turned into a student teaching opportunity and eventually a competition team. Sharing my talent and hobby was what made me realize I wanted to lead others.
When I was 15 I started my first official job as a swim instructor and lifeguard. First at the YMCA then at our outdoor summer pool. I did this all year long throughout high school and even over breaks during college. I had a lot of fun lifeguarding. I knew in high school that my love for water and the YMCA would always play a strong role in my future.
